About

Amanda Schochet has developed an innovative approach to museum experiences by drawing inspiration from one of nature's most efficient pollinators - the bumble bee. Her work demonstrates how biological systems can inform cultural institution design and community engagement strategies.

Speaking at TED 2019, Schochet shared her insights on creating networks of tiny museums, a concept that challenges traditional notions of how cultural spaces should operate and connect with their communities. Her biomimicry approach to museum design suggests new possibilities for making cultural experiences more accessible and distributed throughout communities, much like how bumble bees create efficient networks for pollination across diverse landscapes.

How bumble bees inspired a network of tiny museums

Sometimes, small things make a huge impact. After studying how bees in urban environments can survive by navigating small land patches, ecologist Amanda Schochet was inspired to build MICRO, a network of portable science museums the size of vending machines. Learn how these tiny museums are being deployed in libraries, community centers, transit hubs and elsewhere to increase public access to science.
