Procedural creation and physical destruction by Optical Arts. MAX COOPER: In this chapter of the Unspoken Words story I wanted to explore the beauty and form and feeling of physical mechanisation, and the limits of the machines where things start to strain and become more human. Optical Arts studio created this amazing video, built from machines building art. The cover image of the video is one of the pieces created during this process. I was interested in how straining machines can make them feel more human, pushing my synths to uncomfortable and chaotic behaviours and artefacts which for me were full of feeling, and I asked Optical Arts to try the same - you can see some examples of breaking drills and generally a process of creation via destruction. They did an amazing job precisely syncing the many layers of audio to the visual scenes, and making beautiful shots and art from the machines. Musically, I worked with feelings of playful creation and a touch of sadness. It was another example, as with Spectrum, where the words describing the piece don’t feel entirely correct, and don’t seem to be compatible, but again, can fit without contradiction emotively when communicated musically. ► Visit Unspoken Words companion site: https://www.unspokenwords.net OPTICAL ARTS: The film explores notions of rhythm, consciousness and celebrates the freedom in losing control; the beauty of deciding one's own path. We are often consumed by the monotony and repetitive nature of everyday life. ‘Broken Dreams, Broken Machines’ portrays the idea that if we decide to let our imagination and thoughts run wild - we could find a new comfort and rhythm in the freedom of it.
