Joseph Stiglitz
Nobel Prize-winning economist | Former World Bank chief economist and policy critic
About
Joseph Eugene Stiglitz is a Nobel Memorial Prize-winning economist who has shaped global economic discourse through his academic work and policy analysis. As a professor at Columbia University, he has established himself as a leading voice in New Keynesian economics while maintaining an active role as a public policy analyst and political activist. His groundbreaking contributions to economic theory earned him the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences in 2001, building on earlier recognition with the John Bates Clark Medal in 1979.
Stiglitz brings unique credibility from his extensive policy experience, having served as senior vice president and chief economist of the World Bank, as well as member and chairman of the U. S. Council of Economic Advisers.
His perspective combines rigorous academic foundations with real-world implementation experience. He is particularly known for his support of Georgist public finance theory and his critical examination of globalization management, challenging laissez-faire economic approaches and questioning the practices of major international institutions including the International Monetary Fund and World Bank. His work continues to influence debates around economic inequality, development policy, and the role of international financial institutions.
