About
K Allado-McDowell is a writer and artist who pioneered human-AI collaboration in literature before it became commonplace. In 2021, they co-authored Pharmako-AI with GPT-3, establishing themselves as a distinctive voice in exploring machine intelligence as a creative partner rather than a tool. This groundbreaking work demonstrated how algorithmic systems could participate in generative writing processes, opening new questions about authorship, consciousness, and the nature of creative partnership.
Allado-McDowell founded Artists + Machine Intelligence at Google in 2015, an initiative that brought together practitioners across disciplines to investigate the intersection of art and algorithmic systems. Their subsequent books include Amor Cringe and Air Age Blueprint, alongside the neuro-opera Song of the Ambassadors, which premiered at Lincoln Center in 2022. Currently, they serve on the faculty at SCI-Arc and are preparing a solo exhibition, The Known Lost, at Swiss Institute NYC in 2025. Their body of work spans literature, music, visual art, and curatorial practice.
Allado-McDowell's perspective is rooted in sustained engagement with how technology reshapes creative thinking and cultural production. Rather than advocating for or against AI collaboration, their work models a more nuanced investigation into what becomes possible when humans and machines work together. Audiences encounter someone who has lived these questions through actual production, not speculation, offering concrete examples of how artistic practice can be transformed by unconventional partnerships and technological experimentation.
