The Lesson from the New Kid
In this honest and reflective talk, Lyla shares what it feels like to join a new school and grow up in a family that moves frequently. Drawing on her own experiences, she describes the small but powerful things a new student notices while searching for belonging. She reminds us that connection and communication make all the difference, and challenges students to actively welcome those who are new so that no one feels alone. Lyla is a Grade 11 student who is passionate about positive mental health initiatives and sport. She volunteers through her school in a programme that supports children with special needs, an experience that has deepened her empathy and strengthened her commitment to inclusion. With a growing interest in research around women’s health, Lyla believes that being “new” can be the first step toward discovering something meaningful and transformative. Inspired by the words of Jane Harrison, she values qualities such as patience, courage, and humility as human strengths that transcend labels. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
