About this talk

In From Council Estate to CEO, Dianne Richardson reflects on growing up in a five-generation family in Whitehaven, Cumbria, shaped by the legacy of mining disasters, loss, and resilience. Raised on a divided council estate where identity and belonging were defined by place, she explores how environment, generational memory, and community roots quietly shape character, values, and ambition. Through her personal journey, Dianne shows how these early influences fuelled a lifelong drive to bring people together, build consensus, and create community ultimately leading to a career she loves. The talk is a powerful reminder that ordinary beginnings can produce extraordinary leadership Once described as a social butterfly who creates a hurricane Dianne is passionate about connecting people and organisations. She is a Fellow of the Chartered Management Institute and holds a degree in Business Management and a Masters in Corporate Social Responsibility. She believes in the importance of regions in national and international conversations and takes every opportunity to shout about the achievements of Cumbria and the North of England. She is currently the CEO at Britain's Energy Coast Business Cluster bringing together people and businesses to collaborate and in 2024 was the joint recipient of the Robin Burgess Lifetime Achievement Award at the InCumbria Awards with her husband Gerard. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
